1. Pick a comfortable chair. You are going to be spending a lot of time in your new home office you need to feel good when you work to be productive. Try the chair out. Sit in it and check all the adjustments the chair can do and make sure if feels just right for you. At Home Concept feel free to sit down and try out the office chairs we have until you find the right one.  You won’t know if you don’t take the time and pick the right one to start with.

2. Plan your work space needs to make sure you get the right desk for you. Actually sit down at your kitchen table. Use a plate as your computer monitor and place it where you would want your monitor to be, then layout some of your paperwork. Some people like more space than others do. Some people work more with books and large reports so you need to plan on this. Take a ruler and measure the amount of space that you feel comfortable and then take those measurements to the store. All of our large price signs have the total dimensions of the desk. We also have measuring tapes  you can use to make sure you get all the space you need. A desk that is too small will become cluttered quickly. A desk that is too large and that space might be better used for file storage or additional lighting.
Make sure you think about how many things you will want to store at your desk. Many of our desks have hutch options and make great places to put computer disks or books.  Many of them have doors to keep your office neat and a comfortable place for you to work.

3. Lighting effects mood and performance. Lighting is a critical part of the home office design. The right amount of light and we are more alert and active and more productive. Too dark and we tend to slow down and get sleepy. Make sure that you get light for the entire room; but also focused light for your work surfaces. Make sure to check out our selection of lighting. We carry everything from overhead to floor and table lamps. We also carry a big assortment of desk lamps and full spectrum lamps that take strain off your eyes and make awesome reading and craft lights.

4. Storage. Storage. Storage. Make sure you think for a minute about how much space you need now, but also about what you may need in a year or two. How much paper are you going to create that you are going to want to keep? Plan ahead and save money now by buying the right filing cabinets and storage items fitting them into your floor plan now.  It would be expensive and time consuming to have to go out and redesign your office and buy everything new to fit the new demands of your work space down the road. We have a large selection of file cabinets and book cases to fit every need.
Make sure when you buy your storage pieces that you pay attention to your work habits. Keep the things you use most closest at hand. Put your files to your right if you are right handed and on the left if you are left handed. Make your work space as productive as possible with this one simple but greatly over looked tip.

5. Decorate with style and color. Your work space should be a reflection of you. You want to create a space that is not only productive, but also enjoyable to use. Check out our selection of wall art and home décor.
Pick art that reflects your style. Choose a nice relaxing landscape or may be a colorful modern piece that has bright colors and catches your eye. Then finish your space with some décor items that you find interesting. Maybe you choose something like a decorative book that can also act as storage for your pens and pencils or a silk plant to brighten up your desk.

These are 5 great tips to help you plan your new home office or school study area. With a little planning and help from Home Concept I know we can work together to build a great space for you and your family. So come see us and let’s start this project together.
